Tegrital CR belongs to a class of medications known as anticonvulsants. It functions by reducing nerve signals that trigger seizures and pain. Tegrital CR is used to manage specific types of seizures related to epilepsy, treat nerve pain linked to true trigeminal neuralgia and diabetic neuropathy, and to address bipolar disorder.

You should avoid taking Tegrital CR if you have a history of bone marrow suppression or if you are allergic to antidepressants such as amitriptyline, desipramine, imipramine, or nortriptyline.

Do not use Tegrital CR if you have taken an MAO inhibitor like isocarboxazid, tranylcypromine, phenelzine, or selegiline within the last 14 days.

Take Tegrital CR precisely as prescribed. Do not exceed the recommended dosage or duration set by your physician. Your doctor may occasionally adjust your dosage to ensure optimal results from Tegrital CR.

Tegrital CR may reduce the number of blood cells that assist your body in combating infections, which could increase your risk of bleeding from injuries or getting sick from others who are unwell. To monitor your blood cell levels, regular blood tests will be necessary. Be sure not to skip any scheduled appointments.

Your doctor might suggest regular eye examinations while you are on Tegrital CR.

It may take as long as 4 weeks before you notice improvement with Tegrital CR. Do not cease taking the medication even if you start to feel better, as stopping suddenly could result in increased seizures or unpleasant side effects.

Potential side effects include fever, sore throat, headache accompanied by severe blistering, peeling, or red skin rash; pale skin, easy bruising or bleeding, unusual fatigue; white patches or sores in the mouth or on the lips; feelings of breathlessness, swelling in the ankles or feet; nausea, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes); or reduced urination.
